The Border Union Railway is the operational section of the old Waverley Route which heads both north & south from Whitrope Heritage Centre. With the first section of track laid in 2005, the first trains were running on the 150th anniversary of the original opening of the Waverley Route, on 1st July 2012. It was opened by Madge Elliot of Hawick, stalwart campaigner for both retention and eventual reinstatement of the Waverley Route, and local MSP John Lamont.

All trains are operated by the Waverley Route Heritage Association's wholly-owned subsidiary, the Border Union Railway Company.

Train fares give unlimited journeys throughout the day and also include access to Whitrope Heritage Centre, except during special events.
