Situated in the pretty village of Elsecar, with its pleasant park and surrounding countryside, the Elsecar Heritage Railway is South Yorkshire’s only Heritage Railway. Established in the early 90's, when Barnsley Council re-opened the former colliery workshops at Elsecar as a tourist attraction, the former colliery line at Elsecar has been reopened as a heritage railway.
Since reopening the Heritage Centre has expanded to the large site we see today, containing many different attractions and craft shops, as well as holding regular special events with something for everyone in the family. The Elsecar Heritage Railway is now operated entirely by volunteers who look after all aspects of operating the railway from driving the trains to staffing the gift shop. At present the railway runs between Rockingham Station at Elsecar, through the South Yorkshire countryside alongside the Dearne and Dove Canal, to the present terminus at Hemingfield. The Elsecar Heritage Railway has plans to extend the running line by a further mile to the Retail Park at the site of the former Cortonwood Colliery. New volunteers are always welcome and full training is given for all roles.
