The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum seeks to re-create the atmosphere of this characterful, Edwardian, country railway, which served the county for nearly half a century despite being bankrupt before the first passenger train ran. To do this, it has a station with restored Mid-Suffolk buildings, a steam train consisting solely of appropriate Victorian coaches (not a Mark 1 in sight!), and a line passing through countryside, which has changed little during the succeeding decades.

In addition, the museum has a growing collection of restored goods vehicles, and on event days there are regular demonstrations of loose-coupled shunting. In the exhibition rooms, there is a collection of artefacts, documents and photographs detailing the history of the railway; the displays change regularly. The museum has all the features you would expect for visitors – shop and refreshment room among them – and even a real ale bar housed in a grounded Victorian coach open on most steam days.

Full details of our programme of steam event days can be found on our website.
